Delegates from twenty one countries gathered together for the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APECa) Chemical Dialogue.

 

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is a regional economic forum established in 1989 to leverage the growing interdependence of the Asia-Pacific. APEC’s 21 members aim to create greater prosperity for the people of the region by promoting balanced, inclusive, sustainable, innovative and secure growth and by accelerating regional economic integration.1

 

The CD was co-chaired by Dr. Christine Andres, Acting Government Co-Chair of the Chemical Dialogue (CD), Foreign Affairs Officer, U.S. Department of State, the United States and Dr. Fumiaki Shono, Executive Director, Japan Chemical Industry Association (JCIA).

 

Ongoing programs and action items to address issues concerning trade and technical barriers were discussed during the CD such as the different Virtual Working Groups (VWGs) on Globally Harmonized System and Classification of Chemicals (GHS), Regulatory Cooperation, GHS Classification, Marine Debris and among others. A delegate from Japan also discussed the current efforts of the JCIA to comply with the regulatory requirements of product stewardship and risk assessment such as the Big Dr, chemSHERPA and ASEAN- Japan Chemical Safety Database (AJCSD).

 

Priority issues and updates on chemical regulations were also discussed by each member economy whereby Philippines reported on the Ease of Doing Business efforts in the country including the finalization of the Implementing Rules and Regulations of Controlled Chemicals by the Philippine National Police- Firearms and Explosives Office (PNP-FEO) and updates on inventory of chemicals, CCO on Lead and Lead Compounds, streamlined permitting and licensing process under FDA for HUHS and the status of the Strategic Trade Management Act (STMA).

 

An Industry Pre-Meeting (IPM) and Regulator’s Forum was held on August 15 and 16 respectively as an onset to the Chemical Dialogue on August 17, 2016. 1http://www.apec.org/About-Us/About-APEC
