12 Nov SPIK joins OPCW Seoul Workshop
In an effort to capacitate its state members in eliminating chemical weapons and preventing their re-emergence, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in partnership with the Republic of South Korea conducted the Workshop on the Peaceful Development and Use of Chemistry for Member States of the OPCW in the Asian Region on November 12-14, 2024 in Seoul, Republic of South Korea. The event gathered industry professionals, regulatory experts, and academe personnel from across the Asian region namely the Philippines, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Iraq, Iran, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Maldives, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Nepal, United Arab Emirates, and South Korea.
Ms. Jiyoung Yun, Director of Ministry of Foreign Affairs opened the workshop emphasizing the unwavering and long-standing support of the Republic of Korea to OPCW’s thrusts and efforts. The training revolved around the chemical weapon convention, and experts from OPCW, Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF) Global, and industry partners such as Merck Germany and DuPont (Korea) Inc. highlighted available technologies, best practices and programs on chemical security.
The importance of collaboration across all stakeholders to mitigate chemical security threats and ensure public safety were also emphasized during the workshop. This enabled an open discussion amongst the participants from the industry, academe and government. Mr. Taeeon Kim, Program Officer of OPCW facilitated the workshop along with the Korea Chemical Industry Association (KCIA).
