177th SPIK General Membership Meeting: Fueling Progress through Strategic Import Integration

Under the theme “Fueling Progress through Strategic Import Integration”, the 177th SPIK General Membership Meeting was successfully concluded on June 18, 2025, at The Heritage Hotel Manila. The significant gathering drew leaders of the key industry stakeholders, including government officials and leading figures in the chemical industry to discuss the critical role imports play in building the nation’s economy and that of the industry in general.

Engr. Joel Malaluan, SPIK Director and a member of the Responsible Care Tri-cord, delivered an inspiring opening message that welcomed the SPIK members and special guests, which included Ms. Geraldine Buela from the Board of Investments (BOI).

Prof. Julius Herald B. Altiche, LCB, MCA, Chief of the Customs PEZA Clearance Office, Bureau of Customs, graced the event with an enlightening keynote address. Instinct, rich in content, learning, and skills, both in the field of customs valuation and the authoritativeness of customs clearance provides for the future course of dialogues and debates.

The President of SPIK, Engr. Gretchen F. Enarle spoke to attendees, reaffirming the association’s dedication to addressing the industry’s joint challenges with innovative ideas and maintaining an unwavering focus on safety and the environment in the chemical sector. Her words brought to the fore SPIK’s tireless commitment to its Responsible Care ethic and the Philippine Chemical Industry Roadmap.

It continued with an enlightening lecture on Customs Valuation and Clearance by none other than Prof. Altiche himself. His thorough explanation of declaring goods in accordance with WTO rules is crucial for supporting participants in operating efficiently in such a complex customs environment.

After Professor Altiche’s enlightening talk, an open Q&A session began. Engr. Albert Samuela, SPIK Vice President of the External Affairs Committee, facilitated the Q&A, which was either generated online via a digital link (QR code) or conducted live through raised hands.

After Prof. Altiche’s lecture, DIC Corporation was welcomed as an official member of the SPIK family. SPIK Director and Membership Committee Chairperson Mr. Romeo Dela Cruz officiated the ceremonial induction. DIC Corporation at this important occasion were Ms. Shyla B. Sigue (Technical Manager) and Ms. Fedelita Borja (Marketing and Sales Support Manager) who were given the certificate of membership.

In her capacity as Marketing and Sales Support Manager, Ms. Borja presented an in-depth explanation of DIC’s significant contributions to the industry and explained the winning strategy that has distinguished the company from its competition.

In a touching moment at the induction ceremony, SPIK paid tribute to Engr. Jeffrey G. Mijares for his 8 years as Executive Director. Before the presentation of the Plaque of Appreciation to Engr. Enarle delivered a heartfelt and emotional speech that thanked Engr. Mijares’ remarkable accomplishments and long-standing support for the work of both the SPIK organization and the chemical industry. Warm applause filled the room as Engr. Mijares graciously accepted the honor of indicating his resignation from the prestigious position. His influence on and contribution to the association was evident, and he will be remembered by all who had the good fortune to work with him.

The acknowledgment was followed by an invigorating presentation by Mr. Mark Tan, the Marketing and Sales Support Manager of Jupiter Systems Inc., as he showcased how the highly innovative products and offerings of the company will meet the needs and the objectives of the SPIK community Members. “Jupiter Systems is committed to providing SPIK members with the products and solutions they need to innovate and succeed,” he said.

Mr. Jose P. Raquel Santos, SPIK Director, and Chairperson of the Ways and Means Committee, rounded off the ceremony, offering a thoughtful reflection on the importance of teamwork and solidarity in addressing the issues and opportunities brought about by importation and regulatory harmonization. It was a powerful message that encapsulated the collaborative and forward-thinking sentiment of the day.
