DOST-ITDI Tech Clinic 2025 Highlighted the Crucial Role of Energy Efficiency

The Department of Science and Technology-Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) concluded the 2025 Tech Clinic titled “Energy Efficiency through Science and Technology” on November 11, 2025, at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Makati City. At this event, participants from government, industry, and universities came together for the purpose of further promoting the development of energy-efficient systems throughout the Philippines.

In the welcome ceremonies, Dr. Janet F. Quizon, Deputy Director for General and Technical Services of DOST-ITDI, warmly welcomed everyone and set the tone for a day of promoting advanced energy efficiency through science and technology.

Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr., Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), delivered the online keynote speech. Secretary Solidum’s remarks echoed the point that sustainable energy practices bring dual benefits. “Collaboration is important among government, industry, and the academe in energy efficiency efforts. This is crucial not just for environmental reasons but also as a driver of economic profitability,” Solidum said.

Following the keynote address, Dr. Annabelle V. Briones, Director of DOST-ITDI, presented the institute’s energy initiatives. She conveyed the message that energy is both the lifeblood of an economy and also a major source of carbon emissions into our atmosphere, pointing out a latest move towards improving use efficiency in line with principles from science or technology.

Engr. Alexander Ablaza, President of the Philippine Energy Efficiency Alliance, Inc. (PE2), explained the state of energy conservation and its prospects in our country. He spoke of current trends in this field, as well as pointing out what kind of future lies ahead.

Respectively, for each energy efficiency circuit at the conference, there was a session of reverse-pitching nature:
Cluster 1: Energy Service Companies, with Mr. Raymond Marquez, Managing Director of EconoServ Solutions International, Inc.
Cluster 2: Energy Efficiency Services Sector, presented by Mr. William Alcantara, Managing Director of Vega Energy Services
Cluster 3: Energy Efficiency End-User Sector, represented by Mr. Kemuel Jarel Garcia, Director at Republic Cement and Building Materials Inc.

In the afternoon, participants, including the Samahan sa Pilipinas ng mga Industriyang Kimika (SPIK), broke into discussion groups according to their individual circuits to look at challenges and analyses. They then reported back on what they had come up with for actionable strategies to promote energy efficiency.

The event drew to a close with a synthesis and closing remarks by Dr. Marianito T. Margarito, OIC, Office of the Director for Research and Development. Dr. Margarito gave a thorough summary of each discussion and underscored the necessity for continued cooperation among all sectors involved to ensure both the spread and development of energy-efficient technologies are a success.
