The CBRN Summit 2024, an essential assembly dedicated to combating chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats, drew to a close on December 17, 2024, in Makati City. This significant event saw the participation of numerous government agencies.

The summit was initiated with opening remarks from Usec. Bernardo C. Florece, Jr., Executive Director of ATC-PMC/CBRN National Team Head Secretariat, setting the stage for a collaborative endeavor to bolster resilience against the evolving CBRN threat landscape.

The keynote message was delivered by Ret. Chief Justice Lucas P. Bersamin, the Executive Secretary of the Office of the President.

The Samahan sa Pilipinas ng mga Industriyang Kimika (SPIK) was the only private sector participant, West said, noting that partnership between the public and private sectors is critical in tackling these important security issues.

The summit focused not on the dangers presented by these new forms of potential attack, but rather the need as an industry and as security professionals to work together and consider what must be done now to protect against potential methods of attack in the future – which is very much the ethos behind the summit theme of “Innovative Strategies to Mitigate Risks Against Emerging CBRN Threats and Challenges.”

ATC-PMC served as the secretariat of the Philippine CBRN National Team and the Philippine National Authority on Chemical Weapons Convention and as head of the European Union CBRN Centres of Excellence Regional Secretariat for Southeast Asia; its leadership helped bring together experts and stakeholders from across the globe.

The discussions highlighted the need for collaboration, now more than ever, as we face down these emerging challenges. The involvement of SPIK, a leading member of the private sector, reflected the summit’s intention to maintain a holistic, integrated perspective on CBRN threat mitigation. With the international community stepping into a new phase of engagement against these risks, the conclusions and recommendations from the CBRN Summit 2024 will be pivotal to further shaping how they will be addressed over the coming years.
