27 Sep Chemical Transport Security Workshop
The Samahan sa Pilipinas ng mga Industriyang Kimika (SPIK) in coordination with Sandia National Laboratories – International Biological and Chemical Threat Reduction (IBCTR) organized the Chemical Transport Security Workshop on September 14-16, 2016 at the Acacia Hotel, Alabang, Muntinlupa participated by some ninety (90) delegates.
Safety and security during transport of chemical and hazardous material is an important aspect in the chemical sector. Transportation safety requires an integrated approach with an understanding of the issues link to it including management and procedures, human behavior, training, chemical regulations and technology. On the other hand intentional criminal acts such as theft and terrorism are important issues in transportation security.
Dr. Nancy B. Jackson and Mr. Michael Starr Sandia National Laboratories- IBCTR presented the topics on the importance of chemical safety and security, transportation risk management, introduction to United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (UNRTDG), International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code and IATA, international best practices on chemical safety and security, security principles and pillars in relation to transportation of hazardous materials and emergency response.
Local speakers included Dir. Helen Maita Reyes of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency who presented the Transportation of Controlled and Precursor Essential Chemicals while Mr. Geri Geronimo Sañez of the Environment Management Bureau-DENR discussed Transport of Hazardous Waste. Mr. Jose Regin F. Regidor of the National Center for Transportation Studies presented the Transport Infrastructure Framework of the Philippines. Representative from the Office of Transportation Safety discussed the Proposed National Security Program on Land Transportation, Rail System and Infrastructure.
The 3-day workshop provided the RC Coordinators, Logistics and Supply Chain Managers, 3rd Party Logistics Providers, Truckers and Haulers a better understanding on the implementation and management of chemicals, facilities, and transportation and logistics activities.
