The International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) marked a significant milestone with the kick-off meeting of its Sustainability Working Group (WG) on August 16, 2024. Under the leadership of Mr. Eric de Deckere, Cefic’s Director of Sustainability who also serves as the WG’s Secretariat, and Mr. Andy Liu, Chemours’ Global Product Sustainability Strategy Leader and the appointed Chairman, the group is set to embark on a transformative journey. Comprising a robust coalition of members from the American Chemistry Council (ACC), Cefic, the Responsible Care Leadership Group, the Chemical Industries Association of the Philippines (SPIK), the Japan Chemical Industry Association (JCIA), the Lanka Responsible Care Council (LRCC), and several private companies, the WG’s formation is a testament to the industry’s collective commitment to environmental stewardship and societal progress.

The overarching goal of the WG is to navigate the complex terrain of sustainability within the chemical sector, aligning with ICCA’s ambitious third objective. By fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing, the group aims to empower companies to define and achieve their sustainability goals. This mission is intricately linked to the Global Chemical Industry’s broader ambition to enhance transparency and accountability, ensuring that progress in this crucial area is not only made but also clearly communicated to a diverse range of stakeholders.

This proactive approach is reflective of the ICCA’s strategic vision which emphasizes the need for a holistic view of sustainability encompassing economic, environmental, and social dimensions. By focusing on sustainability within the industry context, the WG will pave the way for solutions that address global challenges such as climate change, and pollution.

In an era where the demand for sustainable products and practices is soaring, the ICCA Sustainability Working Group’s efforts are not only timely but also imperative. Through the dedicated work of its members, the WG is poised to become a catalyst for positive change, guiding the chemical industry towards a more responsible and sustainable future.
