The Kingsford Hotel Manila buzzed with energy on June 19, 2024, as industry leaders, government agencies, and academe gathered for the 174th General Membership Meeting (GMM) of the Samahan sa Pilipinas ng mga Industriyang Kimika (SPIK). Hosting approximately 100 attendees, the event was held under the theme “Safer Materials and Processes: A Transformation towards Sustainability in the Philippine Chemical Industry.”
The gathering hosted by Mr. Rovi John Escalona, ChE graduate of Batangas State University, served as a testament to the association’s enduring strength and unity. With members from diverse backgrounds coming together, the event was a celebration of shared values and unwavering support.
Engr. Jeffrey G. Mijares, SPIK Executive Director, radiated warmth as he addressed the eagerly assembled crowd. His sincere gratitude for their attendance filled the air, making everyone feel valued and appreciated. His invitation set the perfect tone for the event, welcoming everyone to the luxurious hotel and expressing eagerness to embark on this exciting journey together.
The External Affairs Vice President, Engr. Albert A. Samuela, delivered a captivating President’s Report. He lauded the organization’s commendable efforts in promoting sustainable practices and fostering collaboration among industry, government, and academia. His report emphasized the need for ongoing initiatives to tackle the pressing challenges facing the sector, including climate change and resource management. Engr. Samuela also shared the success stories of various projects undertaken by the organization, highlighting its dedication to creating a more sustainable future for the industry.
The 174th SPIK General Membership Meeting, held on June 19, 2024, at the Kingsford Hotel Manila, featured three informative presentations by esteemed speakers. The presentations provided valuable insights into the complexities of chemical regulation and management in the Philippines. The speakers’ expertise and engaging delivery encouraged active participation from the audience, fostering a collaborative environment for further discussion and knowledge-sharing.
The first of three presentations was given by Special Police Maj. Danielo S. Gonzales, MCA Executive Officer Customs Anti-Illegal Drug Task Force (CAIDTF) of the Bureau of Customs. He discussed the policies, rules, and regulations regarding chemical importation and emphasized the importance of compliance to ensure the safe and responsible handling of chemicals. His presentation was well-received, with attendees taking notes and engaging in active discussions during the Q&A session.
The second speaker was Dr. Annabelle V. Briones, Director of the Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). She shared ITDI’s initiatives in supporting the sustainable development of the Philippine chemical industry through various research and development programs, technology transfer initiatives, and capacity-building activities. Her presentation highlighted ITDI’s commitment to promoting environmental responsibility and innovation in the sector.
The third speaker was Ms. Aileen Clamar-Tuliao, Dangerous Drug Regulatory Officer of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA). She focused on PDEA’s policies, rules, and regulations related to controlled precursors and essential chemicals (CPECs), emphasizing the role of stakeholders in preventing their diversion to illegal drug manufacturing activities. Ms. Tuliao emphasized the importance of strict compliance with these regulations to promote sustainable development in the chemical industry and prevent the diversion of chemicals for illegal purposes.
The signing of Memorandums of Agreement and Understanding between Adamson University, SPIK, and the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) in conjunction with the 174th SPIK General Membership Meeting, marked a momentous occasion in the field of chemistry and chemical engineering.

Engr. Dennis T. Pagud, Executive Vice President of PIChE, represented the institute in the signing of the memorandum of understanding.

The Philippine chemical industry continues to flourish as six new companies join forces with the Samahan sa Pilipinas ng mga Industriyang Kimika (SPIK). The induction ceremony, held during the SPIK General Membership Meeting on June 19, 2024, at the Kingsford Hotel Manila, welcomed Costal Bay Chemicals, Inc., Holcim Philippines, Inc., Royal Cargo Philippines, Inc., Meralco, CV Solutions, Inc., and DCH Ecogreen Solutions into the SPIK Family. The addition of these organizations to SPIK’s ranks underscores their shared commitment to promoting sustainable practices and technologies within the industry.
During the ceremony, Internal Affairs Vice President of SPIK, Engr. Arnold Benitez, highlighted the importance of collaboration in driving positive change. “We are thrilled to welcome these six companies into our fold,” he said. “Together, we will work tirelessly to advance sustainable practices and raise industry standards. By working collaboratively, we can achieve more and create a brighter future for the chemical industry in the Philippines.”
