SPIK attended the Stakeholders Consultative Meeting on the establishment of a Testing Laboratory for the BEC (Biodegradability, Ecotoxicity and Compostability) of Plastics by DOST-ITDI-PCIEERD held at the New World Hotel in Makati on November 21, 2024.

BEC Lab is a government strategic initiative that supports local businesses and provide a facility for business to assess environmental impacts of their plastic products. International partners from Canada, the USA, Sweden Japan South Korea, South Africa and Spain will provide appropriate training to ease the lab’s technical team.

The project intends to bring the Philippines plastic sector closer to circularity in an environmentally sustainable manner and consistent with international best practices on eco-friendly materials. SPIK’s participation is another sign of its commitment to environmental sustainability, and improvement of the relations with important stakeholders. BEC Lab will play a key role towards accelerating the adoption of plant-based biodegradable and compostable plastics, helping to reduce plastic waste and pollution.
